“Women are portrayed as objects to be raped, abandoned, and sexually abused as ‘dirty prostitutes’. They are transformed by city men from simple and pure peasant girls into fallen and shameless prostitutes. Their moral degradation is commodified as a selling point – a source of the male readers’ satisfaction. This commodification helps instigate and promote men’s sexual demands and violence toward migrant women”

From “Media, Identity, and Struggle in Twenty-First-Century China”, by R. Murphy and V. L. Fong, 2009
