Two Year Project: “History of Western Medical Philanthropy in China, 1800-1950”

Duties/Responsibilities:
Professor William H. Schneider, Department of History and Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University (Indianapolis) and Director of the Medical Humanities-Health Studies Program, welcomes applications for a post-doctoral fellow position as part of the second stage of a project involving scholarly exchange and building a research base of archival and digital sources in the history of Western Medicine in China, 1800-1950. The position is dependent on Foundation funding expected in March 2011. The duties include coordinating an archival database and research website with participating libraries and archives in North America and China, assisting in organizing two international conferences (one in Indianapolis and one in Beijing), developing and teaching no more than one course per term in the History Department, and otherwise contributing to the research project and building an infrastructure for future research and teaching.The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to pursue a project of his or her own that relates in some way to the history of medicine and science in China. Required/Preferred Qualifications: Indiana University invites applications for a 24 month post-doctoral fellow beginning August 1, 2011. A Ph.D. in Chinese History, History of Science, or Medicine in China is required (using substantial Chinese language primary sources). All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed by July 2011. Preference will be given to candidates familiar with main archival sources on the history of medicine in China held in the U.S. and elsewhere. If Ph.D. is in Chinese or another language, then candidate must show evidence of a high level of competence in English written and oral communication. Candidates must be prepared to develop a significant research project on the history of medicine in China since 1800, or a related topic.
